Food waste collection
in the Inner West.

We collect food waste every week across the Inner West, from Balmain and Rozelle through Leichhardt, Newtown and Marrickville to Ashfield. Each 120L bin costs $45 to $54 a week by weight, ex GST, plus a fuel levy.

Inner West

Where we collect
in the Inner West.

We collect across the Inner West Council area and its edges: Balmain, Rozelle, Lilyfield and Annandale near the harbour; Leichhardt and Glebe; Newtown, Enmore, Stanmore and Petersham; Marrickville and Dulwich Hill; and Summer Hill and Ashfield to the west. That takes in the main eating streets: King Street and Enmore Road, Norton Street, Darling Street, Illawarra Road and Marrickville Road. If you are further west, toward Burwood or Strathfield, send us your address and we will check.

How collection works here

Set up once.
Runs every week.

  1. We deliver the kit

Caddy, liners, signage and the 120L bin, set up in the kitchen.

  2. Collected weekly

We collect the bin on the same day every week.

  3. We set your tier

For the first few weeks we watch the real weights, then set the tier that fits.

Your collection day

Your bin is collected once a week on a fixed day, set when you sign up. Many Inner West shops are on main roads with clearways and narrow rear lanes, so tell us where the bin can be reached on collection morning and we will plan around it.

Small kitchens, and the 2030 step

A lot of Inner West kitchens are small, in shopfronts with a back courtyard and two or three wheelie bins. That matters for the NSW food waste rules, because the last step is low: from 1 July 2030, a covered site with general waste bins of 720L a week, which is three 240L wheelie bins, must have a separate food waste collection. The earlier steps are 3,960L from 1 July 2026 and 1,980L from 1 July 2028. Many sites here will meet the rules in 2030 rather than now, and starting early means the habit is set long before then.

A 120L bin is the same footprint as a small wheelie bin, so it fits in most courtyards and side passages. And because food waste comes out of the general waste bin, your general waste bins get lighter, and it may be worth asking your general waste provider whether your service still needs to be the same size.

Inner West Council and FOGO

Inner West Council already provides a food and garden organics (FOGO) service to households, according to the NSW EPA's council list. Your staff and many of your customers already sort food at home, so a caddy in the kitchen will feel familiar. For businesses, the council is also the regulator for the NSW food waste rules, so it is the place to ask if you are unsure whether your site is covered. Our guide to the NSW food waste rules explains how to count your bins.

What it costs

The price is the same as everywhere we collect: $45 a 120L bin a week for up to 20kg a lift, $49 for up to 35kg and $54 for up to 50kg, ex GST, plus a 9.93% fuel levy shown as its own line. For the first few weeks we watch the real weights, then set the tier that fits. See how the weight tiers work.

Inner West questions

Local
questions.

Every area has the same prices. See all the areas we collect.

We only have a small courtyard. Will a 120L bin fit?
Usually. A 120L bin has about the footprint of a small wheelie bin. Tell us where it will sit and how it reaches the collection point.
We have three 240L general waste bins. Do the NSW rules apply to us?
Three 240L bins is 720L a week. If your site is a covered premises, the rules apply to you from 1 July 2030. Bins emptied more than once a week count for more, so check the EPA guidance for your site.
Can we share one food waste bin with the shop next door?
Talk to us first. It can work for neighbouring sites with one owner or one waste contract, but each business needs to be clear who is responsible under the NSW rules.
